Conjunctive adverbs (adverbialen conjunctions) is the adverb/adverb used as
conjunctions or liaison two clauses (independent clauses). The conjunction of
this acts as a transition and relation between one staple of the mind with
other thoughts that staple. The connecting words used are accordingly,
afterwards, again, also, besides, consequently, finally, for example,
furthermore, hence, however, indeed, likewise, moreover, nevertheless,
nonetheless, on the other hand, otherwise, similarly, so, still, then,
therefore, thus.
The following is a list of the functions and meanings of the conjunctive
adverb:
1.
Due to Reasons stated, (therefore, accordingly,
consequently, hence, then) common sense = therefore.
2. In addition, States (in addition, likewise, moreover, besides, furthermore)
common sense = in addition, Furthermore, also.
3. Stating unexpected results [contrast] (nevertheless, nonetheless, however,)
the common sense = but, nonetheless.
4. Stating the difference directly (however, on the other hand) the common
sense = instead, on the other side.
5. Stating the terms of the (otherwise) meaning = if not.
Example:
- There are no buses, so you'll have to walk.
- If you are sure, then I must believe you.
- You'll have to go now; otherwise you'll get cold.
- She is my neighbor; She is also my best friend.
- She had a fever; Consequently, she stayed at home.
- I wanted to study; However, I was too tired.
- We knew what to expect. Therefore, we were not surprised at what
happened.
- He can't leap tall buildings in a single bound; furthermore, Dwight is a
hog.
- I sat down alongside Adam. Thereafter, he sang.
